ELIGIBLE THEATRE PRODUCTIONS

To be eligible for consideration for the Jessies, a theatre production:

    • must be produced by a Jessies Company Member
    • must be professional, where "professional" is defined by the majority of the artists being paid a living wage for the duration of the engagement (rehearsals and performance), or
    • must be professional, as defined by being a duly approved Equity Co-op
    • must originate within the GVRD, or be jointly-produced with a Jessies Company Member
    • must be registered as a member with the Jessie Society at least 30 days before the first public performance of the first eligible production of the award year
    • must register each show at least 14 days before the first public performance
    • must receive at least six (6) public performances in the Lower Mainland

Complete eligibility information is contained in the Jessie Guidelines - click on this link to view the full document.

SEMI-PROFESSIONAL THEATRE PRODUCTIONS

In theatre productions which fulfill the Jessies criteria for eligibility and which utilize non-paid artists (e.g. students or community performers), only the professional elements are eligible.

COMPANY MEMBERSHIP

Theatre organizations producing an eligible theatre production within the award year are eligible for Jessies Membership for that year. A "theatre organization" is defined as an organization whose stated primary purpose in its mission statement and/or constitution is to produce live theatre. Company membership fees are tiered relative to a theatre organization's production budget, and take the form of advance purchase of a block of tickets to the Jessie Awards for that award year. CLICK HERE to fill out a Company Membership form. Company Membership must be completed at least 30 days before the first public performance of the first eligible production of the award year.

PRODUCTION REGISTRATION

To be considered for Jessie awards, each Company Member must register each of its individual productions and pay a registration fee of $30 + HST each time, in addition to Company Membership. Production Registration forms may be found on our Registration page. Production Registration forms must be received at least 14 days before the first public performance of the production.

To register your company, go to the Registration page.
To register your show, go to the Company Membership page. You must register for both for your production to be eligible. Send an email to registration@jessies.ca with any inquiries.

PROCESS FOR CREATING A NEW AWARD

The Jessie Richardson Theatre Award Society recognizes that new awards emerge in the community from time to time (and that some awards cease to be relevant and need to be removed). The process to request the creation of a new award is as follows.

Submit a request in writing to the Board of Director of the Jessie Richardson Theatre Award Society, at least 12 months prior to the Jessies, identifying the name and nature of the new award. Include a rationale for the new award and an analysis of the segment of the community it would serve. This submission should be no more than 3 pages in length.

Accompany the submission with no fewer than 10 letters of support from theatre community members and leaders. As well, accompany the submission with a petition with no fewer than 100 names of theatre community members who support the creation of the new award.

All submissions will be reviewed by the Board of Directors of The Jessie Richardson Theatre Award Society, who will also grant or refuse the request. All awards can be revoked at any time at the discretions of the The Jessie Richardson Theatre Award Society.
